What started with Ed O’Bannon (formerly a UCLA basketball athlete) when he sued the NCAA in 2009, ended in June 2021 when the US Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA cannot bar athletes from earning money from their “name, image or likeness”. Except this may actually be closer to the beginning of change resulting from this lawsuit than any ending.
The last few months of sports talk have been about NIL and college athletes’ court protected right to earn money from their NIL. “NIL changes everything” is what you hear from sports pundits. They recognize the obvious that paying players and involving agents will change the dynamics between universities and players. However, it seems to me that certain predictions may not be correct and the ultimate expanse of coming changes may still greatly underestimated.
This is a blog about college sports and the massive upheaval we are just beginning to experience. The desire is to include analysis, questions and even some predictions and conjecture. After all, no one really quite knows where this journey ends.
This is a journey for me. I am certain I will learn along the way and need to expound or correct prior posts.
